“Talent is universal- opportunity is not”…….
On this International Women’s Day, my hope is that one day universal opportunity for women will be equal worldwide
Female voices within science not being heard is thankfully becoming a thing of the past. However, my hope for the world above illustrates – whilst Talent is distributed universally, sadly opportunity to use that talent is not always so available. Indeed, female scientists and researchers continue to be under represented….could this be as a result of lack of opportunity?
One thing is sure, when driven women see a glimmer of a window of opportunity – they seize it! Particularly when they see and can take example from women who have blazed new trails, often against very slim and meagre odds, clearing a path for others to follow.
With these wonderful role models, hopefully windows of opportunity, no matter how small, will seen and seized by driven women, encouraging them to pursue their passions with equal opportunity regardless of sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religion. This is not only advantageous from a gender or human rights standpoint, but also from the development of science in general. This would expand scientific understanding not only in general, but in a much needed far more diverse spectrum of humanity.
I look at the women within my field of psychology who have influenced me over the last number of years and encouraged me to learn from their findings in order to use positive psychology as the evidential backbone of coaching psychology, to help others thrive and seize opportunity as it arrives.
So, on this International Women’s Day i would encourage all women to shine their light as bright as they can to be a beacon for those who are further a way from that light so that they may see you and follow your trail. We all have something to learn from each other. I continue everyday to search for these beacons of light!
It is never to late to pursue your dreams and shine your light….and if anyone ever tells you that your light is to bright, then hand them a pair of shades!
Happy International Women’s Day!
